Project Description: The redesigned schoolyard becomes the heart of the school complex, linking the elementary (VS) and middle school (NMS). The new connecting building, with separate entrances, encloses the yard while opening up to it with a large glass wall, merging indoor and outdoor spaces. Terraced gym roofs are integrated into the yard’s design, creating multi-level spaces for learning and exploration.
Urban Planning: The building on Adalbert Stifter Street remains unchanged, maintaining the northwest settlement structure. The roof and top floor of the former HS 1 are removed to reduce its bulk, aligning it with the adjacent former VS 1 and the new connecting building. The top floor of the former HS 2 on Mayrhoferstraße is also removed and the structure shortened to harmonize with the northeastern settlement. Corners of the three southeastern buildings are straightened for clearer organization.
Functionality: The elementary school is placed in the northwest building, with expanded hallways for learning and break spaces. The middle school is organized in the southeastern buildings, arranged around learning "marketplaces." The new connecting building houses the library, music room, stage, and more, providing ample space for joint activities. The gymnasiums serve both schools and local clubs, while the schoolyard offers outdoor learning areas and event space. Terraced gym roofs connect the yard to sports facilities on the new VS roof.
Economic Efficiency: The design retains existing structures and window openings, making it cost-effective. Only the new connecting building is newly constructed. The gym roofs will be greened for thermal protection, and all windows equipped with sunshades.
