Urban Design Aspects: The project features three staggered buildings, harmoniously integrated into the landscape and centered around a main square. This square serves as the heart of the campus and the primary access point for the buildings, blending ground-floor functions with the communal center. The elevated square offers sweeping views over the city, connecting the site to Johannes Kepler University and its surroundings. A gently sloping "urban ramp" integrates the site with the steep terrain, functioning as a promenade to the central square. Public transport is connected via stairs and a funicular. Building heights are kept low to respect the urban climate, with a natural recreational zone buffering the neighboring garden plots. Pedestrian and bike paths are smoothly incorporated, with all vehicle traffic and deliveries managed underground.
Architecture: The elevated location of the site above the city gives the project a unique identity. The design responds to this by not simply placing buildings in the landscape, but by creating a distinct neighborhood—a campus centered around a vibrant urban square framed by three buildings. The project's exterior is deliberately understated and reserved, sparking curiosity about the interiors. Large glass facades, especially on the ground floors facing the central square, enhance this concept by inviting light and creating transparency. Inside, expansive glazing continues, offering views into different areas and maintaining openness.
Phase I: "The Hub" features a multi-story atrium and serves as a key social hub. A large skylight floods the space with natural light. Galleries and platforms provide easy access to various areas.
Phase II: This phase is defined by a multi-story staircase immediately after the main entrance, extending the central square into the building.
Phase III: Known for its green recessed courtyards, this building ensures that office clusters are naturally lit.
Functionality: Despite the complexity of the project, the various functions are integrated into straightforward building forms. The atrium in Phase I, "The Hub," acts as a social meeting point, housing the Student Service Center and a picnic zone, with sightlines to the Exhibition Lab and event spaces. Platforms within the atrium connect these areas efficiently. Additional entrances for the Exhibition Lab and event spaces allow for use beyond regular university hours. The prominently located assembly hall not only offers city views but also serves as a bridge between the JKU and the broader city.
