Description
This Python program was developed within Grasshopper for Rhino, aimed at automating the generation of floor plans and initial rapid room layouting. The program utilizes data retrieved from two linked Excel files: one containing a room list and the other an adjacency matrix.The core functionality of the program is driven by a randomized bin packing algorithm, which operates using a seed value to randomly fill a user-defined rectangular bin in Grasshopper. By comparing the generated floor plans against the predefined adjacency matrix, the program calculates a compliance percentage, reflecting how well the generated layout adheres to the desired room adjacencies.
The program is designed to perform multiple iterations. For instance, running the algorithm 20,000 times results in 20,000 sets of floor plans, from which the top 10 layouts with the highest compliance percentages are selected and displayed. These layouts are based on the stored seed values, ensuring reproducibility and fast computation.
Urban Design: Additionally, this algorithm can be effectively applied to urban design ideas. By simply adjusting the data in the Excel sheets, the same principles can be utilized to develop urban layouts, allowing for a transition from architectural design to larger urban planning contexts.
